Andris Nelsons & the Wiener Philharmoniker: Mahler Symphony No. 9

Salzburg Festival

90 Min

Andris Nelsons continues his survey of all Mahler’s Symphonies with the Wiener Philharmoniker with the valedictory Ninth, streaming live from the Salzburg Festival. Dating from 1909, two years before Mahler’s death in 1911, the work represents the apogee of a sparer, “late” Mahler style, in which distilled, intense beauty are used to express the composer’s emotionally turbulent life and growing awareness of his mortality: the heart disease that would kill him had been diagnosed in 1907. It was premiered posthumously in 1912 by the Wiener Philharmoniker, and their performance here with one of today’s leading conductors promises to be an unmissable event.
