Beethoven's "Eroica" changed the form and aspirations of the symphonic genre for all time. Its use of a larger orchestra, its extended length and an expressive range that reached into the tragic influenced all of the composer's great successors. Few conductors have worked as intensively with Beethoven's symphonies as Herbert von Karajan, who recorded the complete cycle three times with the Berlin Philharmonic. Director Hugo Niebeling's elaborate direction makes this concert film from the 1960s visually impressive as well: the orchestra musicians are placed on rising platforms, and the camera enhances the symphony's emotional impact through cuts that are precisely coordinated with the music.
