Seong-Jin Cho joins Lahav Shani and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra for a programme featuring two of the most popular musical works of the Romantic period. The Korean pianist brings a rare poetry to a performance of Tchaikovsky's mighty First Piano Concerto that fuses quicksilver virtuosity with thoughtful introspection – the latter a characteristic also of his Schumann encore. The second half of the concert features Berlioz's revolutionary Symphonie Fantastique of 1830, a work that brought the vivid daydreams of the Romantic imagination – culminating a nightmarish Witches Sabbath – into the concert hall.
