Verbier Festival

“Just imagine a work of such magnitude that it actually mirrors the whole world.” Mahler’s own words regarding his Third Symphony, premiered in 1902, aptly describe the ambition of a symphony of unprecedented scope and ambition, whose six movements run the gamut from bucolic marches, through pastoral idylls, a joyous choral song the forbidding utterance of the contralto’s “Midnight Song” through to a sublime final Adagio. And it’s this work that Simon Rattle – Mahler expert par excellence – here conducts to open the 2024 Verbier festival, with the Verbier Festival Orchestra, a selection of choruses and Magdalena Kožená as soloist.
