Berlin 750th Anniversary: Karajan conducts Mozart & Strauss

Berliner Philharmoniker

Production Date: 01/05/1987
80 Min

In 1987, when the city of Berlin celebrated its 750th anniversary, none but the most prescient could have foreseen the historic events that would reunite the divided city just over two years later. Herbert von Karajan died just months before the fall of the Berlin Wall, but in the last decade of his life he brought a visionary – even monumental – quality to everything he conducted. Naturally, Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic rise to the occasion, with radiant accounts of masterpieces by two composers who were arguably closest to Karajan's heart: a youthful divertimento by Mozart, and Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra.
