Karajan conducts Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier

Love conquers everything, they say…but what about time? Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier imagines a fairytale Vienna with a touchingly human heart; an 18th-century dreamworld where a silver rose can turn life upside down, and love blossoms to the lilt of a waltz. In 1984, probably few living conductors understood its beauties better than Herbert von Karajan, and as both director and conductor he ensured that this ravishing Salzburg Festival staging could hardly be more faithful to the creators' intentions. Anna-Tomowa Sintow's noble, intensely poignant portrayal of the Marschallin is at the centre of a super cast.
