Buck Ram and Lester Bowie: Pioneers of American Music
Buck Ram and Lester Bowie are two iconic figures in the world of American music, each leaving a distinct and indelible impact on jazz and pop music history.
Buck Ram: Fascinating Works and Legacy
Born Samuel Ram on November 21, 1907, in Chicago, Buck Ram was one of American popular music’s most prolific songwriters, producers, and arrangers. His influence spans songwriting, artist management, and talent development, particularly within the doo-wop and pop genres.
Ram’s early affinity for music led him to self-instruction on the violin and eventually to study under Joseph Schillinger. He started his professional journey as an arranger for big band leaders, including Glenn Miller, in the 1930s and 1940s. His contribution to jazz history includes introducing Chick Webb to Ella Fitzgerald and encouraging Webb to hire her, which led to Fitzgerald's first major singing engagement.
Buck Ram is best known for writing and producing a string of enduring 1950s hits for The Platters, including "Only You," "The Great Pretender," and "(You’ve Got) The Magic Touch." His songwriting catalog extends beyond The Platters, encompassing collaborations with various artists and contributions to the broader American pop and jazz songbook.
As the manager and creative force behind The Platters, Ram’s role extended into legal arenas, where he protected the group’s name and legacy through numerous legal battles. He was a vocal opponent of discriminatory industry practices.
