Immerse yourself in the captivating legacy of Samuel Dushkin’s music at STAGE+. A virtuoso violinist, Dushkin left behind a rich catalog of music that continues to inspire and touch the hearts of many. However, it's important to note that Dushkin was not a composer himself, but rather a collaborator with renowned composers like Igor Stravinsky.
About Samuel Dushkin
Samuel Dushkin (1891–1976) was a Polish-born American violinist and pedagogue recognized both for his performance career and for his collaborations with major composers of the early 20th century. Born in Suwałki, Poland, Dushkin studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Guillaume Remy (violin) and Ganaye (composition), and later with Leopold Auer in New York, and with Fritz Kreisler. His studies with Fritz Kreisler are referenced in secondary sources, but some cite “Amar” instead of or in addition to Kreisler as a teacher. Kreisler’s direct pedagogical role is less documented than that of Auer and Remy.
Dushkin's Debut and Collaborations
Dushkin made his European debut in Paris and London in 1918 and premiered in New York in 1924 with the New York Symphony Orchestra under Walter Damrosch, launching a career that spanned Europe, America, and the Middle East. Dushkin is especially known for his close artistic partnership with Igor Stravinsky. Stravinsky composed the Violin Concerto in D major specifically for Dushkin, who premiered it in Berlin in 1931. Their collaboration led to the creation of several important works for violin and piano, including Duo Concertante and Divertimento, and transcriptions such as the Suite Italienne from Pulcinella. Dushkin also premiered Maurice Ravel’s orchestral version of Tzigane with Pierre Monteux and the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, with the date listed as 19 October 1924 in some sources and 1925 in others. He gave first performances of chamber works by Prokofiev, Milhaud, Poulenc, and others.
Compositions and Transcriptions
Apart from performing, Dushkin composed études and various pieces for violin, and notably created numerous violin transcriptions. Some of his own virtuoso compositions were occasionally attributed to earlier composers. His best works for violin and piano have been published, for example in the collection "Samuel Dushkin: Repertoire – The Best Pieces for Violin and Piano" (Schott Music, ED 20423). His transcription output includes arrangements of French, Russian, and other composers’ works, often designed to highlight violin virtuosity.
