Salzburg Festival, 1998: Major Collaborations
Hadley performed at the Salzburg Festival, one of the world’s leading annual classical music festivals. In 1998, Hadley starred as Jimmy Mahoney in Kurt Weill’s "Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny" at the Salzburg Festival, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. His performances highlighted his adaptability and vocal finesse, as he worked under maestros known for their exacting standards and musical insight.
Notable Projects and Repertoire
Jerry Hadley was widely acclaimed as possibly the finest Mozart tenor of his generation, performing leading roles in works by Mozart, Schubert, and Mendelssohn. He also excelled in French Romantic repertoire (including Hoffmann, Faust, Werther), and had a notable specialty with the challenging role of Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress.
In 1997, Hadley created the title role in Myron Fink’s The Conquistador at San Diego Opera. In 1999, he originated the role of Jay Gatsby in the world premiere of John Harbison’s The Great Gatsby at the Metropolitan Opera, reprising it in 2002 for his final performances at the Met.
Hadley was a frequent recitalist and appeared in celebrated duo programs, notably “The Tom and Jerry Show” with baritone Thomas Hampson. His performances encompassed a wide range of genres, including Broadway and operetta, bringing a popular touch to classical vocal recitals.
