Joela Jones's Distinguished Career

Joela Jones served as Principal Keyboardist for The Cleveland Orchestra, becoming the orchestra’s longest-serving principal player in its history. She retired in October 2021 after 54 seasons, having performed in over 250 concerts and as a soloist in more than 50 different concertos, spanning repertoire from Bach to Messiaen. Jones frequently appeared as a soloist and was also the principal accompanist for the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and visiting vocal soloists.

Teaching and Mentoring

A dedicated educator, Jones has been faculty at the Kent Blossom Music Festival since 1989, where she serves as chair of keyboard studies. She has taught and mentored numerous young pianists, many of whom have gone on to distinguished musical careers. She also teaches advanced orchestral keyboard classes at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she holds both BM and MM degrees, and has worked with the New World Symphony in Miami and Cleveland State University.

Instrumental and Repertoire Versatility

Jones’s artistry covers a broad spectrum. She performs on piano, organ, harpsichord, celesta, synthesizer, and accordion. Her concerto repertoire includes works by composers such as J.S. Bach, Olivier Messiaen, and Maurice Ravel. She is notable for her performances on the Norton Memorial Organ at Severance Hall since its 2001 renovation.

Joela Jones has received numerous accolades for her contributions to music. These include the Distinguished Alumni Award (2006) from the Cleveland Institute of Music and The Cleveland Orchestra’s Distinguished Service Award (2021).
