Francis Jackson: An Influential English Composer

Francis Jackson (1917–2022) was a highly influential British organist, composer, and choir director, best known for his long tenure as Director of Music at York Minster and his significant contributions to 20th-century English sacred music.

Jackson began his musical journey as a chorister at York Minster in 1929 and studied under Sir Edward Bairstow. After active military service in World War II, he returned to York Minster in 1946 as Organist and Director of Music, holding the post for 36 years until his retirement in 1982. Jackson served as President of the Royal College of Organists from 1972 to 1974. He was honored as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1982 and as a Commander (CBE) in 2007 for his services to music.
