Life and Career of Antonio de Salazar

Born in Puebla de los Angeles (now Puebla, Mexico), Salazar held important musical posts, notably as maestro de capilla (music director) at both the Puebla Cathedral and later at Mexico City Cathedral, the most prestigious ecclesiastical music positions in New Spain. He taught polyphonic music and was known for his rigorous, contrapuntal style, echoing European Renaissance models, especially that of Palestrina, even as Italian Baroque styles began to dominate the scene.

Musical Style and Contributions

Salazar’s sacred works are marked by strict counterpoint and conservative polyphonic writing, representing the last flourish of Hispanic Renaissance style before the surge of Italian musical influence in Spain and its colonies. He was also celebrated for his villancicos—lively, vernacular choral songs often performed at Christmas. Some were written in the negrillo style, meant to imitate the language and rhythms of African slaves in colonial Mexico. Salazar collaborated with prominent Mexican literary figures such as Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, setting some of her texts to music.
