Bernhard Scholz: A Fascinating Figure of 19th-Century German Music

Bernhard Scholz (1835–1916) was a prominent German conductor, composer, and educator. Originally destined to take over his father’s lithography and publishing business, Scholz shifted his focus to music, studying piano with Ernst Pauer in Mainz, counterpoint with Siegfried Dehn in Berlin, and voice in Milan with Antonio Sangiovanni. His influence on German musical life was substantial, especially through his long tenure at the Hoch Conservatory, shaping generations of musicians.

Background and Career

Scholz held significant teaching and conducting positions throughout his career. He served as an instructor at the Munich Conservatory, Court Kapellmeister in Zürich, Nuremberg, and Hanover, Director of the Cherubini Society in Florence, and held faculty roles at the Stern and Kullak Conservatories in Berlin. He also served as the Director of the Orchestra Society in Breslau and the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt.

Fascinating Works and Artistic Legacy

Scholz composed in various genres, including opera, symphonic, chamber, and piano music. One of his most notable works is his Piano Concerto, which achieved significant recognition when Clara Schumann, one of the leading pianists and musical figures of her day, championed the piece by including it in her concert repertoire. Scholz was also engaged in the important artistic debates of his time. He was one of the four signatories—alongside Johannes Brahms, Joseph Joachim, and Julius Otto Grimm—of the 1860 anti-"Music of the Future" manifesto, which rejected the radical directions taken by the New-Weimar-School (notably Liszt and Wagner). This places Scholz firmly in the camp of the more conservative Romantic tradition, valuing clarity of structure and expressive poetry.
