Fascinating Works by Barney Bigard

Barney Bigard (Albany Leon Bigard, born March 3, 1906, and died June 27, 1980) was an influential American jazz clarinetist and tenor saxophonist, best known for his long-standing association with Duke Ellington and his vital contributions to early jazz. Bigard’s artistry and innovations made him one of the foremost clarinet soloists of the swing era, especially recognized for blending the soulful sounds of his native New Orleans with the sophistication of big band jazz.

Key Achievements and Musical Legacy

Bigard was the first great clarinet soloist in Ellington’s orchestra, performing with the band from 1927 to 1942. He made crucial contributions both as a player and composer, helping define the signature Ellington sound. Bigard co-composed some of Ellington’s most celebrated works, including "Mood Indigo," a jazz classic and Bigard’s best-known composition. The origin of its melody involves Bigard's teacher Lorenzo Tio, Jr. Bigard contributed the second strain, but he is not its sole or primary composer. Credit for the final song is shared between Ellington, Bigard, and Irving Mills. His confirmed compositions with Ellington also include "Clarinet Lament," and "Lament for Javanette."

Bigard was known for his warm low register, delicate phrasing, and signature chromatic passages on the clarinet. He played the Albert system clarinet, an older design that allowed for uniquely expressive slurring and phrasing.

After leaving the Ellington band, Bigard played with legendary musicians such as King Oliver, Freddie Slack, Kid Ory, and most notably, Louis Armstrong.
