Although Corelli published only six collections of instrumental works, including solo sonatas, trio sonatas, and concerti grossi, he can easily claim the title of the most influential instrumental music composer and one of the greatest violin virtuosos of the entire Baroque era. Shortly after his studies in Bologna, he settled in Rome, where he soon became known as one of the leading violinists; his patrons included Queen Christina of Sweden and the wealthy Cardinal Pamphili. When the latter moved to Bologna in 1690, Corelli moved into the palace of the young Cardinal Ottoboni and took over the direction of his well-staffed private orchestra. Referred to by his contemporaries as the "new Orpheus," he died respected and wealthy. Corelli established the forms of the chamber sonata and the concerto grosso. But he not only earned merit in musicology with this: the ingenuity and elegance of his works written in these forms, from which later composers like Handel and Bach could draw, will always secure them a place of honor in the musical repertoire.
