A review of Shai Maestro's second album for the European label ECM, "Human," reveals a perfect alignment with the label's chamber jazz aesthetic. This work places the bandleader firmly within a great tradition. "Human" showcases Maestro's open, sinewy classicism, structured by a subdued, graceful, fraternal dialogue between trumpeter and pianist. The Israeli pianist expands his usual trio of bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Ofri Nehemya with the American trumpeter Philip Dizack, making his ECM debut. Dizack proves to be an excellent counterpart for the bandleader, his trumpet sound as multifaceted as Maestro's approach to the keyboard. Maestro is a fluid, versatile pianist with a soulful musical approach, exemplified in the title track "Human"—a short but impressive composition. If his previous album was a reflection of past harmonies, this follow-up holds a mirror to the future. Within these shades of information, window-framed views reveal the possibilities of constant change.
