In a recent release, Cecilia Bartoli has put together an opulent CD/DVD box set with a lavish book as a tribute to Maria Malibran, the renowned Bel Canto singer from the Romantic era. Bartoli's dedication brings Malibran's life and artistry back to life, showcasing her as a true superstar of her time and later, a legend. After extensive research and collection of memorabilia related to Malibran, Bartoli embarked on this project, tracing Malibran's life through various cities before delving into the album. Bartoli's homage surpasses mere interpretation of Malibran's past successes as she delves deep into the emotional world of her musical heroine. The included "Making Of" chapter in the DVD vividly documents this journey, revealing Bartoli's meticulous exploration of Malibran's essence. By layering accounts from renowned witnesses like Chopin, Rossini, and Bellini, a compelling portrait emerges of Malibran, a cosmopolitan figure embodying the Romantic spirit and captivating audiences with her Andalusian heritage. Her untimely death at twenty-eight further cemented her iconic status, as evidenced by the immense turnout at her funeral in 1836. As part of her tribute, Bartoli has unearthed hidden musical gems, including Mendelssohn's aria "Infelice" and compositions by Manuel Garcia and Lauro Rossi. Noteworthy in the collection is Malibran's own piece "Rataplan," which Bartoli delivers with infectious enthusiasm. Highlighting the set is the renowned Bellini aria "Casta Diva" from "Norma," recorded with Orchestra La Scintilla conducted by Adam Fischer and featuring guest musicians like Maxim Vengerov, Celso Albelo, and Luca Pisaroni. The extensive book accompanying the CD and DVD overflows with Malibran memorabilia, letters, and newspaper clippings, while also showcasing Bartoli's enchanting presence in a nostalgic nod to the romantic era.
