They called Aaron Copland "the Dean of American music", and over a life that spanned the 20th century he came closer than any other composer to defining the sound of America. In this biographical documentary, conductor Hugh Wolff and Copland scholar Howard Pollack retell his life story – exploring the genesis of such works as the Lincoln Portrait, El Sálon México and the Eight Poems of Emily Dickinson. The narrative is illuminated with interviews with the composer, specially-recorded excerpts from his works, and rarely-seen archive films – including footage of Copland conducting his own Clarinet Concerto with its dedicatee, Benny Goodman, as soloist.
