In the 1980s, the Munich Klaviersommer liked to create truly one-off partnerships – real festival occasions, uniting musicians from opposite extremes of the classical and jazz worlds to create live performances that could, one feels, only happen right there and right then. Pianist Isaac Steiner had always believed that improvisation was as vital to the classical tradition as it is to jazz, and for one night in 1985 – together with two giants of the German jazz scene, Rudi Roth and Gary Todd – he put that principle to the test: a sparky, exuberant romp through three centuries of melody, as energizing as it is entertaining.
