Natalia Trull is a piano virtuoso of the Russian school – trained in St Petersburg and as commanding in Prokofiev as she is in Chopin. But in 1988, when she gave this performance as part of the 1988 Munich Klaviersommer festival, she was still best-known for her triumph in the 1983 Belgrade International Piano Competition and her silver medal at the 1986 International Tchaikovsky Competition. For her recital at the Philharmonie im Gasteig, she chose to focus on Chopin, and her account of the Second Sonata – best-known for its Funeral March – is in a tradition that extends back to Rachmaninoff and beyond.
