On their way to the Coronation celebrations at Reims, an unlikely group of (highly vocal) travellers are thrown together at an inn. The consequences are … well, let's just say that Rossini wasn't afraid to let his hair down. Il Viaggio a Reims is a gala opera; a celebration of melody and wit rather than a serious drama and Alain Maratrat's 2005 production for the Théâtre du Châtelet plays it as exactly that. Valery Gergiev and his Mariinsky forces bring a thrilling panache to the musical side of this sparkling semi-staging, in which Parisian style meets vocal firepower with irresistibly entertaining results.
