Shostakovich declared Weinberg's opera The Passenger "a masterpiece", and since its belated premiere in 2006 it's come to be recognised as one of the most intelligent – and devastating - operatic reckonings with the legacy of the Holocaust. The setting is an ocean liner bound for Brazil, some time after the end of World War II, where a German passenger with a dark past encounters a woman she knows to be dead. Memories, however, can deceive, and not every story has a tidy ending. Director Nadja Loschky's extraordinary 2020 production from Graz is uncompromising in its musical and dramatic power.
