When director Pierre Audi died aged 67 in May 2025, the opera world lost one of its visionary creators. This sleek production of Stefano Landi's 1619 "pastoral tragicomedy" was Audi's last as the Artistic Director of Dutch National Opera and saw him return to the Orpheus myth nearly 30 years after staging Monteverdi's better known L'Orfeo in 1995. Landi's La Morte d'Orfeo is considered a milestone in the development of early opera and involves a substantial number of characters across its five acts. In this performance, members of the dynamic young cast each take two roles, while early music specialist Christophe Rousset conducts his renowned period-instrument ensemble Les Talens Lyriques.
