Simon Rattle first fell in love with the harmonically and rhythmically rich music of Jean-Philippe Rameau as a teenager and in 2018 he conducted a spectacular production of Hippolyte et Aricie, the French composer's first opera, at the Berlin State Opera. The story, with its origins in Greek mythology, tells of the title characters' love, which is thwarted by Hippolyte's stepmother Phèdre. Icelandic-Danish artist Ólafur Elíasson was enlisted to design the production, providing dazzling costumes and impressive effects using shadow, light, mirrors and fog. The vocal ensemble is led by the internationally acclaimed singers Magdalena Kožená and Anna Prohaska.
