Major Orchestras and Positions

Sawallisch held principal conductor positions with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra from 1960 to 1970 and the Hamburg Philharmonic from 1961 to 1973. He was also the Music Director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva from 1970 to 1980 and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich from 1971 to 1992, where he later served as Opera Director. From 1993 to 2003, he was the Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
