Fascinating Works by Wilhelm Meyer Lutz
Wilhelm Meyer Lutz (1829–1903) was a German-born British composer and conductor, celebrated for his contributions to light music, musical theatre, and particularly for his burlesques and popular stage works. His legacy is closely tied to the vibrant London theatre scene of the late nineteenth century. Lutz emigrated to the UK at 19 and began as an organist before quickly moving into theatrical conducting. He became the music director of the Gaiety Theatre, London, in 1869, where he was the main composer and arranger for a string of popular burlesques and light theatre productions spanning 25 years. He also composed serious music, pieces for the Christy Minstrels, and remained active as a song composer into the twentieth century.
Highlights of Lutz’s Career
Among his notable works is "Faust Up-to-Date" (1888), a burlesque that is among his most celebrated, especially the barn-dance music composed for its pas de quatre, which became very popular in its own right. Lutz was best known for crafting accessible and entertaining theatre music that matched the wit and energy of Victorian burlesque and musical stage.
