The Broken Consort I, Suite No. 3 in C Major

John Dowland's "Lachrimae Pavans" is among the most important compositions of English chamber music. The seven pavans, which Dowland called "Seaven Teares," are based on his well-known song "Flow My Teares." In these pieces, Dowland unfolds an extraordinary variety of contrapuntal and harmonic structures made possible by the theme. The Baroque violinist John Holloway has made the Lachrimae Pavans the centerpiece of a concert program distinguished by his exceptional interpretation. Within this program, alongside Dowland's compositions, works by other renowned composers of the period will be performed, including Henry Purcell, William Lawes, John Jenkins, Thomas Morley, and Matthew Locke. Through the selection of works with strongly contrasting timbres and characters, Holloway and his ensemble succeed in vividly conveying the diversity and richness of 17th-century English consort music.
