Any production of Mozart's last great opera seria La Clemenza de Tito is a special occasion – even at Glyndebourne, the English summer festival that has made a speciality of Mozart for nearly eight decades. This was Glyndebourne's first Clemenza of the new century, and Claus Guth's psychologically penetrating staging made a powerful impact on critics and public alike. The cast, too, is excellent, with Richard Croft on lustrous voice in the title role and Anna Stéphany as an intensely touching Sesto. Robin Ticciati conducts the period instrument forces of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with irresistible sensitivity and flair.
