Two brilliant works, composed 10 years apart, but which could hardly be more different: Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 from 1921 captures the spirit of the 20th-century in its vibrant rhythms and angular melodies, while Richard Strauss's Suite from his 1911 opera Der Rosenkavalier casts a nostalgic, knowing eye back across time to its setting in the 18th century. Both works, however, are thrilling showpieces, perfect for the open-air stage at Munich's Odeonsplatz: Prokofiev's concerto is a gift for a virtuoso of Daniil Trifonov's calibre, and the Munich-born Strauss's Suite is an irresistible opportunity for a virtuoso orchestra – such as the superb Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra – to show its mettle.
