The year 2011 marked a century since Gustav Mahler’s death, and the composer-conductor was duly honoured at the opening concert of the Salzburg Festival, with Pierre Boulez conducting the Wiener Philharmoniker in Das klagende Lied — an ambitious early cantata that looks forward to his later songs and symphonies. Boulez pairs it with two works by Mahler’s pupil Alban Berg: the suite from his unfinished opera Lulu (with Anna Prohaska as soloist), and the song "Der Wein" (featuring Dorothea Röschmann). The result is an unmissable concert charting the development of Viennese modernism — with one of its foremost 20th-century exponents at the helm.
