Tenor Benjamin Bernheim scored a critical triumph when he first performed the title role in Offenbach's fantastical final opera – which imagines surreal and disturbing amorous episodes in the life of the Romantic poet E. T. A. Hoffmann – in this colourful 2021 Hamburg production by Daniele Finzi Pasca. He leads an outstanding cast, which also includes soprano Olga Peretyatko as all four objects of Hoffmann's affection, bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni embodying the four villains, and mezzo-soprano Angela Brower singing the Muse and Hoffmann's companion, Nicklausse. In the pit, conductor Kent Nagano secures stylish and idiomatic playing from the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra.
