Filmed in Berlin's Tanzsaal an der Panke, Polish pianist Rafał Blechacz performs a selection of important works from the keyboard literature. He begins with Bach's Partita in C minor, whose six movements – running the gamut from Baroque grandeur to playful, dancelike counterpoint – are a test of any player's control and touch. Franck's Prélude, fugue et variation – originally composed for organ – follows in Bach's footsteps, as does Chopin's great Third Piano Sonata, a work in which the composer displays not just his gift for melting melody and keyboard fireworks, but also his rigorous command of structure and counterpoint. A waltz by Chopin, further showing Blechacz natural affinity for the composer, completes the programme.
