Nelsons conducts Mahler: Symphony No. 3

"The symphony must be like the world," said Gustav Mahler: "It should contain everything." He never came closer to realising that vision than with his Third – and longest – Symphony: a sweeping hymn to love and nature that embraces distant trumpets, children's songs, military marches and Alpine meditations. In this emotionally charged concert from the 2021 Salzburg Festival, Andris Nelsons and the Vienna Philharmonic embrace the epic scale and the sense of wonder that animates this extraordinary symphony, and with two outstanding choirs plus contralto Violeta Urmana – a particular favourite of the Salzburg audience – this is both an exceptional performance and a document of a very special Festival occasion.
