The year 2024 sees the Spring Festival in Tokyo – Japan’s largest classical music festival – celebrate its 20th anniversary. A central pillar of the programme is a complete cycle of Beethoven’s piano sonatas performed by one of its most eminent exponents: Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder. For this, the first of two concerts broadcast live on STAGE+, he presents two of the best known sonatas, the impassioned “Pathétique” and the expansive “Waldstein”, alongside three other works: the two brief sonatas Op. 49 No. 2 and Op. 79 and the ebulliant and ambitious Sonata in B Flat, Op. 22.
