The Genius of Carlos Kleiber: Beethoven's Seventh Symphony

Concertgebouw Orchestra

Production Date: 01/01/1983
37 Min

Carlos Kleiber only had about a dozen symphonies in his repertoire. Yet all of his conducting was marked by a perfection and supremacy that earned him the admiration of colleagues, who were no strangers to competition and envy. As many as four of Beethoven's symphonies can be found in Kleiber's catalogue of sound and video recordings. He performed the Seventh with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1983 that was particularly celebrated. Rarely are the rhythmic energies, the grand sweeps of the developments, and the details of the orchestration heard with such depth and thrill. The concert culminates in an unleashed, stormy rendition of the furious finale – and in ovations from the audience.
