With some artists the name alone speaks volumes – though it's still hard to believe that Makoto Ozone's career spans six decades, from his earliest appearances as a child prodigy to his current status as an eternally youthful elder statesman of Japanese jazz. There's certainly an irrepressible freshness about the set that he played at the 1984 Munich Klaviersommer, shortly after his breakthrough debut album. On this live concert film the young Ozone performs his own compositions, pausing only for a typically original homage to a personal hero, Miles Davis. His assurance – as well as his imagination – is breathtaking.
