Mozart's violin sonatas are an under-appreciated highlight of his output. He was a master of both instruments, and these jewel-like, endlessly inventive works offer a portrait of the domestic Mozart at his most engaging, inventive and intimate. Pianist Gerhard Oppitz and violinist Gottfried Schneider were both trained in the same Austro-German tradition, so this music comes as naturally to them as breathing, and this delightful recital – recorded in 1985 when both artists were still in their 30s – gains a special touch of magic from being performed in the rococo surroundings of Augsburg's Schaezlerpalais: a venue known to Mozart himself.
