Rachmaninoff conceived his final major work, the Symphonic Dances Op.45, for the colours of a full symphony orchestra. But he made this version for two pianos at the same time, and unsurprisingly – since he was one of the 20th century's supreme piano virtuosos – it's a thrilling experience in its own right, pushing both players to the very limits of their technique. It's a perfect vehicle, in other words, for the pairing of pianists Nicolas Economou and Gerhard Oppitz. Two great musical friends – both hugely admired prior to Economou's untimely death in 1993 – captured in full flight in Munich's Amerikahaus.
- Soloists:
- Gerhard Oppitz (Piano), Nicolas Economou (Piano)
