Rainer Kussmaul (1946–2017) was a highly respected German violinist, conductor, and educator. Born in Mannheim into a musical family, he received his initial training from his father before studying with Riccardo Odnoposoff and at the State Academy of Music Stuttgart. His career spanned several decades, and he was celebrated for his versatility in both orchestral and chamber music.

Kussmaul held the position of First Concertmaster with the Berlin Philharmonic from 1993 to 1998. During his tenure, he led the prestigious orchestra and later co-founded the Berliner Barock Solisten (Berlin Baroque Soloists) with his colleagues. He was also a founding member of the Stuttgart Piano Trio, highlighting his chamber music credentials. As an educator, Kussmaul held professorships at the Freiburg Music Conservatory from 1977 and directed violin classes at the Carl Flesch Academy in Baden-Baden from 1987.
