AboutMax Richter

As one of the most influential and renowned composers of his generation, Max Richter is known for his ability to seamlessly blend traditional orchestrations with modern electronic elements. His unparalleled skill in translating profound human experiences into musical compositions has earned him a loyal global fanbase, with his catalog boasting over three billion streams to date. Beyond his solo work, Richter is a prolific collaborator, having worked with esteemed creatives and visionaries across various disciplines. From scoring Dior shows for Kim Jones and composing for ballets choreographed by Wayne McGregor, to his contributions to the world of cinema and television with directors such as Denis Villeneuve, Martin Scorsese, and Ari Folman – Richter's versatility knows no bounds. Richter, alongside his partner, visual artist Yulia Mahr, co-founded Studio Richter Mahr. In the English countryside of Oxfordshire, Max and Yulia established the multimedia production studio in a former farmhouse, equipping it with state-of-the-art solar and heat pump technology. Living on a 31-acre woodland property, the duo shares a deep passion for cultivating the land and creating a sustainable working environment that serves as a place for both emerging and established creatives to develop their work. This September, Richter celebrates the tenth anniversary of his groundbreaking project "SLEEP" with his largest shows to date. Released in 2015 and conceived with his creative partner Yulia Mahr, the masterpiece "SLEEP" is considered one of the most ambitious and culturally significant classical music projects of the 21st century. In an 8 ½-hour musical exploration of the interplay between sound and the sleeping mind, it investigates the effects of subsonic sounds and repetition in promoting slow-wave sleep. The nocturnal performances of "SLEEP" have become unique cultural events that challenge our perception of music. They blur the lines between concert and art installation and have taken place in the world's most famous venues, including the Sydney Opera House, the Philharmonie de Paris, and the Great Wall of China. To mark its tenth anniversary this September, Richter will bring this transcendental live experience to a new audience by performing the largest "SLEEP" shows to date at Alexandra Palace in London on Friday, September 5th, and Saturday, September 6th. This will be the first time Richter has performed "SLEEP" in London since 2017. Richter will also release "Sleep Circle," a new abridged version of "SLEEP," described as a hallucinatory 90-minute journey into the hypnagogic state – the state in which a person dreams.
