Overview of Her Music
Louise Farrenc (1804–1875) was a pioneering French composer, virtuoso pianist, and influential educator of the Romantic era. Her works are gaining renewed attention alongside those of Ravel, Mussorgsky, and Saint-Saëns, as highlighted by recent performances from renowned orchestras and soloists. Farrenc initially composed exclusively for piano during the 1820s and 1830s, earning high praise from critics like Robert Schumann. She expanded her repertoire to include chamber and orchestral music in the 1830s and 1840s. Her chamber music, in particular, is regarded as her strongest and most innovative output. Despite the era’s dominance of opera in France, Farrenc never had the opportunity to produce one.
