Overview of Arthur Somervell

Sir Arthur Somervell (1863–1937) was a prominent English composer and music educationalist, active during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Though his compositional style was conservative—reflecting the influence of Mendelssohn and Brahms—he contributed significantly to English music through both his compositions and his long career in music education. He was appointed Inspector of Music to the Board of Education in 1901 and later became Chief Inspector of Schools in 1920. His knighthood was awarded in 1929 for his services in music education. He shaped music education in Britain for nearly three decades.

Notable Works and Recordings

Somervell's compositions range from the highland scenario of Highland Concerto to the romantic ambience of A Shropshire Lad, reflecting his fascination with both landscape and literature. The selection of albums and works demonstrates the breadth of Somervell’s output, encompassing concertos, song cycles, chamber music, and choral arrangements.

Highland Concerto and Concertstück

These works are part of the Hyperion Romantic Piano Concerto 54 series. Rendered beautifully by Martin Roscoe and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the guidance of Martyn Brabbins, these compositions reflect Somervell's talent in creating a musical narrative.

Violin Concerto

Experience the combination of Coleridge-Taylor and Somervell's genius in the Violin Concertos, a part of the Hyperion Romantic Violin Concerto 5. The harmonious display put forth by Anthony Marwood, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and Martyn Brabbins is truly a delight to the ears.

Silent Noon

Savour Somervell's silence in Silent Noon, performed extraordinarily by Bryn Terfel and Malcolm Martineau. His sensitive approach to art song is evident in this setting, which remains a favorite among English song aficionados.

Maud and A Shropshire Lad

These works are passionately performed by David Wilson-Johnson and David Owen Norris, which demonstrate the composer's literary interests in their musical form. A Shropshire Lad is the first known setting of A.E. Housman's celebrated poetry and remains a staple of the English song repertoire.

Jacob & Somervell: Clarinet Quintets

Indulge in the intertwining melodies of Jacob & Somervell: Clarinet Quintets, carried out masterfully by Thea King and the Aeolian String Quartet. His chamber music, including the Clarinet Quintet often recorded alongside fellow English composer Gordon Jacob, highlights his craftsmanship in smaller forms.

Praise to the Lord: Hymn Favourites from St Paul’s Cathedral

Brought to life by Christopher Dearnley, St Paul's Cathedral Choir, and John Scott, this work reflects the composer's spiritual side and demonstrates his lasting impact on sacred and choral music.
