James Watson began his brass journey in Leicestershire and quickly established himself as a prodigy. He served as principal cornet of the Desford Colliery Band at just 11 years old and won both the Junior and Senior Champion Soloist of Great Britain titles at 14. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, he became Principal Trumpet of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, later holding similar posts with renowned ensembles such as the Royal Opera House, London Sinfonietta, Nash Ensemble, and, most notably, leading the world-famous Philip Jones Brass Ensemble.

A Legacy in Brass Music

In the brass band world, Watson’s association with the Desford Colliery Band was both foundational and transformative. He returned to conduct Desford in 1987, spearheading their success, and led the band in notable recordings, including Trittico for Brass Band (1989). His time with Desford and, later, the Black Dyke Band (as artistic director from 1992–2000), marked periods of artistic innovation and competitive victories, including multiple National Championships titles.

James Watson conducted and recorded numerous important brass works, often collaborating with prestigious bands such as Desford Colliery Band and Black Dyke Mills Band. The Simpson: Music for Brass project, performed with the Desford Colliery Band, is among the significant recordings highlighting his role as both conductor and champion of contemporary brass repertoire.
