Nonsense. During his lifetime, Beethoven did not recognize the 32 Variations on an Original Theme in C minor, WoO 80, as his own work when he heard it and dismissed the piece as nonsense. This differs markedly from the composer's attitude toward his later string quartets, in which he demonstrated a different understanding of music. Although the work is suitable for both practice and concert performance, the Baroque influences and the concise rhythmic structures are particularly striking.

The variations are characterized by an impressive overall conception that encompasses numerous tonal and rhythmic facets. While arpeggios and repeated notes dominate the early variations, orchestral-sounding passages emerge in later sections. Rhythm remains a prominent and engaging element throughout, for example, through accentuated motifs and ascending figures.

The individual variations offer a wide range of musical expressions and techniques, including orchestral allusions and particularly expressive passages. Each variation possesses its own distinct character, yet blends harmoniously into the overall work, highlighting Beethoven's creative mastery.

The Variations on the Duet "Nel cor più non mi sento," WoO 70, also attest to Beethoven's versatility and inventiveness. Pianists will find these variations a delightful challenge, revealing Beethoven's original approach to Paisiello's well-known theme. The musical portrayal of love and vitality underscores Beethoven's diverse compositional style.

The Variations on "Rule, Britannia," WoO 79, combine humor with technical brilliance. Beethoven develops Thomas Arne's theme in a sophisticated manner, incorporating subtle harmonic shifts and playful elements. These variations demand intensive preparation and showcase Beethoven's artistic virtuosity to a remarkable degree.
