Mari Samuelsen
In her artistic work, violinist Mari Samuelsen explores the subtle nuances between light and darkness, which embody an almost mystical power of nature. Her second album on the renowned Deutsche Grammophon label, titled 'Lys', features compositions by thirteen female composers, from the medieval Hildegard von Bingen to contemporary artists such as Caroline Shaw and Hildur Guðnadóttir. This bold collection of dynamic and original pieces is dedicated to the themes of light and life. The diverse program includes both new commissions and fresh interpretations of existing works. The fourteen pieces combine contemplative and invigorating elements, capturing the essential phenomenon of light. By playing with subtle shades of light, Samuelsen creates a soulful and expressive listening experience. 'Lys', which means 'light' in Norwegian, will be released on May 20, 2022.
