Expectations were high when Richard Jones's new production of La Bohème was premièred at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 2017, and the result didn't disappoint – a vivid, spectacular reimagining that restored the spirit of youthful rebellion, as well as the romance, to this most beloved of Puccini's operas. Hailed by critics as an instant classic, its subsequent revivals have been hugely popular, and this particular performance – captured live in early 2020 – features a particularly spirited cast, with the Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva (an unforgettably vulnerable Mimì) making a near-ideal partner for Charles Castronovo's ardent Rodolfo.
