Wagner described Lohengrin as his "Romantic opera", and on the surface it's the stuff of chivalric legend – the fair and virtuous Elsa, her evil accusers, and the mysterious knight who sails to her aid in a boat drawn by a swan. But its depths are profound, and no director was better equipped to explore them than Nikolaus Lehnhoff, a director immersed in Wagnerian tradition. His 2006 production at Baden-Baden is as complex as it is powerful – and with Kent Nagano conducting a cast that includes Waltraud Meier and Klaus-Florian Vogt, the result is a landmark among 21st-century Wagner productions.
