A hot day in a New York tenement, right in the middle of the 20th century. Some residents dream; others quietly despair. And yet somehow, amid the chaos, hope and tragedy of a great city, life goes on. Kurt Weill's "Broadway opera" Street Scene is a show like no other, an ensemble drama teeming with unforgettable tunes and unvarnished humanity. John Fulljames's inventive 2018 production for the Teatro Real, Madrid strips away the walls that divide the characters, and with a cast that includes Mary Bevan and Eric Greene, the results are as vivid as they are moving.
