Premiered at Paris's Opéra-Comique in 1840, La Fille du régiment reached its 1000th performance at the venue in 1914 and remains the most popular result of Donizetti's high-flying career in the French capital. Packed with memorable tunes and fizzing with comic energy, it's also a work that demands real vocal virtuosity from its principals. In this performance from the 2021 Donizetti Opera Festival in the composer's hometown of Bergamo, soprano Sara Blanch and tenor John Osborn sparkle irresistibly as the romantic leads, while rising star Michele Spotti conducts. Luis Ernesto Doñas directs a production that only adds to the vivid colour and comic brilliance of one of Donizetti's best-known operas.
