The crème de la crème of Mozart singing, a highly esteemed conductor and one of Austria's most beautiful sacred buildings make this recording a very special experience. Under the direction of Karl Böhm, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna State Opera Chorus and a quartet of vocal soloists led by the angelically pure-voiced Gundula Janowitz come together in Vienna's Piaristenkirche for Mozart's Requiem – a work that casts its special spell right from its melancholy and consoling first bars. The interpretation was recorded with the greatest care over a period of no fewer than four days, with the surrounding roads closed to traffic.
